JLPT N4 - kanoukei
The Potential Form of verbs lets you say if you can or can not perform an action. The verbs become group 2 verbs.
Key Examples
For group 1 verbs, shift the final syllable of the dictionary form to the え column and add る.
- どこで 猫 が 買えますか。
- Where can I buy a cat?
- 京都 へ 行けません。
- I can't go to Kyoto.
For group 2 verbs, replace る with られる.
- すし が 食べられますか。
- Can you eat sushi?
- 私は 私の人形 が 捨てられない。
- I can't throw my doll away.
In group 3, します becomes できます.
- 教師 の ために レポート が コピー できます。
- I can copy the report for the teacher.
- 彼は 食事 に 来られません。
- He can't come to the meal.
